To make a tax invoice in Australia with this tool, answer whether your business is registered for GST, enter your business name and ABN, add the customer, set the invoice number and dates, list each item with its quantity and price, add your payment details and terms, then save the document as a PDF.
The preview updates as you type. When your business is registered for GST, the heading reads Tax invoice, each line carries a GST switch and the GST is shown per line and in the totals. When it is not, the heading reads Invoice and no GST appears anywhere on the document. Everything you type here stays in your browser. Your PDF is created on this device. A checklist under the preview tracks the items the ATO lists for a tax invoice; it never stops you saving.
Invoice or tax invoice: which one should you issue?
Per the ATO, a business registered for GST issues a tax invoice, headed Tax invoice, and a business that is not registered issues a plain invoice headed Invoice, with no GST on it (as at October 2026). This tool sets the heading from your answer to the GST question, so you do not have to remember the rule.
A tax invoice is the document a GST-registered buyer needs to claim GST credits, so the ATO sets out what it must show (next section). Per business.gov.au, no law sets out what a regular invoice must contain, though the same details are good practice.
A business must register for GST once its GST turnover reaches $75,000 (as at October 2026, per the ATO and the GST Regulations 2019). Whether your own business should be registered depends on your circumstances: check with the ATO or your accountant, or read who has to register for GST on our GST calculator page.
What a tax invoice must show in Australia
The ATO lists the following items for a tax invoice for a sale under $1,000 (as at October 2026):
that the document is intended to be a tax invoice, which the heading Tax invoice does
the seller's identity: the legal name or registered business name
the seller's ABN, printed on the document itself
the date the invoice was issued
a brief description of each item sold, including the quantity (if applicable) and the price
the GST amount payable for each sale, or, where the GST is exactly one eleventh of the total price, a statement that the total price includes GST
the extent to which each sale is a taxable sale
A tax invoice for a sale of $1,000 or more also needs the buyer's identity or ABN (as at October 2026).
Per the ATO, a tax invoice mixing taxable and non-taxable items must clearly show which are taxable; this tool prints the GST against each line.
Per the ATO, for a sale over $82.50 including GST, a GST-registered seller must give a tax invoice within 28 days of a request (as at October 2026).
This tool works out GST per line, rounds each line to the nearest cent and adds the rounded amounts, so totals agree to the cent.
If you only need the GST figure, the GST calculator adds 10% to a price or divides a GST inclusive total by 11.
Invoicing when you are not registered for GST
If your business is not registered for GST, the document is an invoice, not a tax invoice, and it shows no GST (as at October 2026, per the ATO and business.gov.au).
In this tool, answering No sets the heading to Invoice, removes the GST column and total, and offers an optional line, off by default, stating that no GST has been charged because the business is not registered. The ATO does not require that line; some businesses add it to remove doubt for their customers.
Most business invoices show the seller's ABN, registered for GST or not. Per the ATO, a payer may have to withhold tax from a payment where no ABN is quoted on an invoice: the rate is the top rate of tax, 47%, on payments of more than $75 excluding GST (as at October 2026). The ATO publishes a Statement by a supplier form for cases where withholding does not apply; whether an exception applies to you is a question for the ATO or your accountant.
Payment details and terms
No payment detail is part of the ATO's tax invoice list, but per business.gov.au an invoice should say when and how you want to be paid. This tool prints whatever you fill in under How to pay: account name, BSB and account number, PayID, and BPAY biller code and reference if you are a BPAY biller. A PayID can be your ABN, which keeps a personal mobile number or email address off the document.
Per business.gov.au, payment terms are set by your business and form part of your sales contract with the customer. The choices in this tool, on receipt, 7, 14 or 30 days, are common ones, not rules; business.gov.au gives 7, 14, 21 or 31 days as examples. Only the issue date is on the ATO's list for a tax invoice; the due date is there for your customer. If customers often pay late, see Invoice paid late? below.
Invoice paid late? Your options, in order
Start with the steps that need no finance: send the invoice the day the work is done, with the due date and payment details on it; follow up on the due date; offer PayID or card; and ask for a deposit on larger jobs. Finance is the later option, and it suits some businesses and not others.
If the gap between invoicing and getting paid is squeezing cash flow, read how invoice finance works. Invoice finance is for businesses that sell to other businesses on 30 to 90 day terms and wait for payment; if most of your customers are households or pay on the spot, there are no unpaid invoices to borrow against, and a business line of credit is the product a broker would usually look at instead. If the next job needs a tool, ute or machine first, that is equipment finance, a different question. We compare options across our lender panel, and we will say so if none of them fits.
121 Brokers is a finance broker, not a lender. Nothing on this page assesses your invoice or your customer: a lender decides any facility after its own assessment. If you want options compared for your business, ask a broker to compare them. No obligation.
Invoice generator FAQs
What is the difference between an invoice and a tax invoice?
A tax invoice is the GST document: per the ATO, only a business registered for GST issues one, it is headed Tax invoice and it shows the seller's ABN and the GST. A business that is not registered issues a plain invoice headed Invoice with no GST on it. This tool sets the heading from your answer.
Can I issue a tax invoice if I am not registered for GST?
Per the ATO, no: a business that is not registered for GST issues a standard invoice, and the words tax invoice should not appear on it (as at October 2026). The document shows no GST, is headed Invoice, usually carries your ABN and may state that no GST has been charged. Answering No to the GST question does this.
Do I need an ABN on my invoice?
Per the ATO, a tax invoice must show the seller's ABN, and most business invoices show it whether or not the seller is GST-registered. Where no ABN is quoted, the payer may have to withhold tax at the top rate, 47%, from payments over $75 excluding GST (as at October 2026). Exceptions exist: ask the ATO or your accountant.
How long do I have to keep invoices?
Per the ATO, most business records, including the invoices you issue and receive, must be kept for five years from when the record was prepared or obtained or the transaction was completed, whichever is later (as at October 2026). 121 Brokers keeps no copy, so save the PDF and file it. Unsure? Ask the ATO or your accountant.
Can I send a tax invoice as a PDF?
Yes. Per the ATO, a tax invoice does not need to be issued on paper; any digital document sent to the customer needs to carry all the required information (as at October 2026). The PDF this tool produces has a place for each item the ATO lists; filling them in is up to you.
How should I number my invoices?
The GST law does not set a numbering format; business.gov.au calls a unique invoice number a good idea, and it is ordinary bookkeeping practice. A common pattern is a prefix and a running number, such as INV-0001, with each number used once. This tool suggests the next number from the last one used on this device.
Is my invoice data stored anywhere?
Everything you type here stays in your browser. Nothing is sent to 121 Brokers. A draft can be saved in this browser; Clear my details removes it. If you have accepted analytics cookies, we count how often this tool is used, for example how many PDFs are created. Those counts never include anything you type.

General information only
This tool builds an invoice from the details you enter. It is general information, not tax, accounting, legal or financial advice, and not a quote or an offer of finance. Waiting on invoices to be paid?
Invoice finance lets a business borrow against unpaid invoices while it waits for customers to pay. 121 Brokers is a finance broker, not a lender: we compare options across our lender panel and you decide whether any of them is worth proceeding with. We are typically paid a commission by the lender when your finance settles. No obligation.
